She gazes into her deep, brown eyes; listens to her gentle, lilting voice weaving imaginative tales; and remembers another time they were together though the other woman is not even aware of that memory she cherishes. She had only been a child. It had been on one of her many forbidden excursions that she'd first heard Belle's voice. She'd followed it from the ocean into a river and found herself in a place she'd never been before.

Ariel has always enjoyed new places but had held back then, yearning to hear more of the other girl's story though she couldn't understand her language and longing for her lovely words to be translated. She remembers the stories and tingles now as she did then. She's no longer afraid Belle will run away from her because she's a mermaid, but she knows that the Princess will flee if she discovers the thoughts running through Ariel's head.

Belle pauses in reading her fairy tale and looks down into Ariel's eyes. For a moment, Ariel's afraid she may have sensed her thoughts, but then she pushes the childish notion away. Belle doesn't know what she's thinking. She'll never know, and because she'll never know, she'll always be able to keep her friendship. "Go ahead." Ariel smiles. "Finish your story."

Belle does, though completely aware of Ariel's desires. She knows the feel of a heated gaze and the thoughts lurking behind such a look. She's felt them twice before, first from Gaston and since from her husband. She knows what Ariel's thinking, though she'll never call her on it. She loves her husband but also adores her friend and will keep their friendship the way it is as long as she can despite her friend longing for something more she'll never be able to give.

The End

  • I thought this was lovely. I love Disney princess crossovers and FxF fics are even more of a treat. You did a fair rendition of the princesses. Loved it.
